ACADEMIC TEAM

Academic competition teams help in raising student awareness and interest and at the same time contribute new knowledge to the students. This will also teach students the importance of healthy competition and why this will help them later in life as adults.

Membership criteria: As a member of the Academic Team you are held to a higher standard than the rest of the school's population. Members may not receive any grade on a printed report (progress or report card) lower than a C. Members will be responsible for reporting their grades every 4 1/2 weeks when those grades are distributed to the Academic Team Coach for their approval. If a student fails to meet the grade requirement, the student will have to sit out of the next three meetings or until they can prove that they have brought the grade up to standard. Repeated offenses are subject to removal from the team. Being held to a higher standard also means having the right behavior to participate. Referrals are not acceptable and may be used to determine if the student remains on the team.

Dues: All team members must pay a one-time $20 to help cover the cost of uniforms and up to date practice materials.

Meetings: Wednesday afternoons from 4:00-5:00 in the coach's classroom. Pick up for members will be in the front bus loop no later than 5:15 PM by a parent or guardian. Repeated failure to be picked up on time may lead to the student being removed from the team.

The purpose of Academic Team meetings, as with physical sports, is for training. Students will practice for one hour on a weekly basis in an attempt to home their trivia and answering strategies.

DRILL TEAM

As part of the band, the drill team provides color and movement to the music during parades. In addition to enhancing the marching band, the drill team participates in the Winter concert at MTI in which they perform a choreographed routine between band performances. If you are interested in becoming part of the drill team, please contact Mrs. Arthur.

FFA is a nationally-recognized intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. It is one of the three components of agricultural education.

HOSA - Health Occupations Students of America

Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) is a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

Participation in HOSA assists students with the development of leadership and teamwork skills. Participation in HOSA includes attending leadership conferences and competing with other students at the district, state, and national levels. In 2022, Fort King had 3 top ten finishers at the international conference held in Nashville, TN.

HOSA meets every other week on Mondays from 4:00-5:00 pm. The dates do change depending on holidays, etc.

MATH COUNTS

Math Counts is a National competition program designed to stimulate 6th, 7th and 8th grade students’ interest and achievement in mathematics.
Math Counts meets after school every Monday from 3:50 to 4:45 in Mrs. Rickett room (04-112).
Math Counts: Regional Competition will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Maplewood Elementary from 8:15 until 3:15.

NJHS- National Junior Honor Society

Sponsors: Mrs. Chinn and Mrs. Shepler

Mission: Five main purposes have guided chapters of NJHS from the beginning: to create enthusiasm for scholarship; to stimulate a desire to render service; to promote leadership; to encourage responsible citizenship; and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.

Criteria: NJHS membership is open to Fort King students in 7th and 8th grade. Students must have and maintain a GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or higher. Members must have good behavior in school with no discipline referrals. Members must accumulate at least 18 points through attendance and participation in community and school service projects. Points are earned several ways; attendance at a meeting gives 1 point, each hour of service gives 1 point, when goods are donated, they are given a point value and the members are advised what the point value is.

Members must participate in at least one community service project. We participate in many as a club. However, they can participate in a project on their own as long as it is approved by the sponsors. There is a form in the folder to be completed by a supervisor if you are doing community service outside of the club. You are responsible for completing and returning this form.

Members must participate in at least one school service project. They can get points for donating items to one of the ASD parties, but donations alone will not count towards “participation”. They must attend and help with one of the school projects.

Meetings: Meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month in the library. Students are to report to the library right after school and meetings last until 5:00. Students need to make arrangements to be picked up no later than 5:15 in front of the school. If students are picked up late on two occasions, they will no longer be able to stay for after-school meetings.

Dues: All members must pay a one time $20 fee to cover the cost of club shirts and the induction ceremony.

Upcoming Events:

Members are currently collecting canned goods to donate to the Oak Griner Baptist Church food pantry.

The club will host a holiday party for students with autism at our school. The party will take place Tuesday, December 13th. Students can earn points toward induction for bringing items for the celebration. There are 19 students in our autism units. We will need items to place in goody bags for the students. We will also need party snacks and drinks. They will receive 1 item for each item brought in. They can also choose to help with the party and will receive 1 point for participation.

Nerd Herd

Sponsors: Officer Wissinger

Nerd Herd is a club where students can get together and talk about comics, movies, video games, and anything else that’s geeky.
It gives them a chance to make new friends that have the same interest and also get them prepared for High School clubs.
Nerd Herd also lets the students realize that police officers are people too and that we have hobbies, families and are geeks.
